US Space Vulnerable to Attacks From Russia and China: Author

The U.S. space is vulnerable to attacks from Russia and China, according to Brandon Weichert, author of “Winning Space: How America Remains a Superpower.” According to the expert, the U.S. Space Force has no replacement for its cumbersome multi-functioned military satellites. “The problem is, is that the way the Pentagon for 30 to 40 years has procured and deployed satellites, they rolled a bunch of functions into one or two systems, which makes them very expensive, makes them very big, which means they have to be married to a special rocket, which makes them even more expensive than they have to go into orbit,” Weichert told “China in Focus” on NTD, a sister media outlet of The Epoch Times....

Tom Cotton Says Ukraine War Will End in ‘Negotiated Peace’

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), a prominent Republican and Senate Armed Services Committee member, said Thursday a Ukrainian victory in the ongoing war will ultimately come in the form of a “negotiated peace.” In January, Cotton penned a letter to President Biden urging him to provide more advanced weaponry to the Ukrainian military and empower the country to “throw out the Russian invaders, retake its sovereign territory, and win this war.” This week, speaking at the National Review Institute’s Ideas Summit, the senator clarified that—while short-term military wins are crucial—negotiations are the endgame. “From Ukraine’s standpoint, victory in the end is some kind of negotiated peace,” he said. “If Ukraine is successful enough on the battlefield… that’s how they can negotiate at a table.”...

White House Warns Americans Not to Travel to Russia After Arrest of WSJ Reporter

The Biden administration has condemned the detention of a Wall Street Journal reporter by the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB). National Security Council Spokesperson John Kirby told reporters on March 30 that the targeting of American citizens by the Russian government is unacceptable and that the United States strongly condemns the detention of reporter Evan Gershkovich. Kirby went on to say that President Joe Biden has been briefed on the situation and has spoken with Gershkovich’s family and employer. He also told reporters that the U.S. embassy in Moscow is seeking consular access to the detainee. The FSB, the main internal security and counterintelligence organization that succeeded the Soviet-era KGB, said on March 29 that it had detained the journalist stationed in Moscow, in the city of Yekaterinburg in the Ural Mountains, around 1,500 kilometers (932 miles) east of Moscow....

Russia ‘Has Lost’ War in Ukraine: Sen. Risch

Russia can no longer achieve victory in its attempted conquest of Ukraine, according to a senior U.S. legislator. The Russian military’s early fumbles, continued mass casualties, and the nation’s larger economic woes will ensure that Russian President Vladimir Putin will fail to permanently occupy Ukraine and oust its government, says Sen. Jim Risch (R-Idaho). “He’s lost this war. Ukraine has not won this war, but Russia has lost it,” Risch said during a March 29 discussion with the Hudson Institute, a conservative think tank. “He will never, ever [permanently] occupy Ukraine.” Risch, who serves as ranking member for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said that Putin had initially believed his attack on Ukraine would fracture the 30-member NATO and ultimately lead to its demise....

Oversight Groups Discover No Confirmed Fraud or Misuse of Ukraine Aid, Officials Testify

Oversight mechanisms for American aid to Ukraine are effectively preventing fraud and diversion, according to Congressional testimony from those involved. Nicole Angarella, the acting deputy inspector general for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), said there is no evidence that direct assistance to embattled Kyiv has been fraudulently or otherwise diverted from its intended purposes. “I want to be clear that providing timely, impactful, and independent oversight of USAID’s Ukraine response is my office’s top priority,” Angarella said. “From our substantiated work that we’ve done thus far, we have not identified any instances of fraud or misuse with respect to the direct budget support.”...

No Change to US Nuclear Posture Following Russia’s Pledge to Arm Belarus: State Department

The United States will not adjust its nuclear posture following an announcement by Russia that it will place tactical nuclear weapons in neighboring Belarus. Russian President Vladimir Putin said over the weekend that Belarus could house Russian tactical nuclear weapons by the beginning of summer. The Biden administration says that Russia is not seriously considering the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine, however, and will not adjust its own nuclear posture as such. “We have not seen any reason to adjust our own strategic nuclear posture nor any indications Russia is preparing to use a nuclear weapon,” said State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel during a March 27 press briefing....

Travel Disruption Hits Germany on Eve of Transport Strike

BERLIN—An increased number of travelers in Germany boarded trains and planes on Sunday, a day before a major one-day strike that aims to bring the country’s transportation system to a standstill. But even advance travel was met with disruption in some places as Munich airport already shut down because of the impending strike on Monday, and technical problems affecting German airline Lufthansa in Frankfurt led to flight delays and cancellations at the country’s biggest airport. Munich Airport, the country’s second-busiest, said that the ver.di union was hitting it with two days of strikes and it has no regular passenger or cargo flights on either Sunday or Monday. A total of around 1,500 connections were affected, and takeoffs and landings were only possible for emergency humanitarian flights, German news agency dpa reported....

Putin Says Russia Will Station Tactical Nuclear Weapons in Belarus

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced plans on Saturday to station tactical nuclear weapons in neighboring Belarus. Putin said the move was triggered by Britain’s decision this past week to provide Ukraine with armor-piercing rounds containing depleted uranium. Tactical nuclear weapons are intended for use on the battlefield and have a short range and a low yield compared with much more powerful nuclear warheads fitted to long-range missiles. Russia plans to maintain control over those it sends to Belarus, and construction of storage facilities for them will be completed by July 1, Putin said. He didn’t say how many nuclear weapons Russia would keep in Belarus. The U.S. government believes Russia has about 2,000 tactical nuclear weapons, which include bombs that can be carried by tactical aircraft, warheads for short-range missiles, and artillery rounds....

French President Macron Says Will Not Yield to Pension Protests

PARIS—President Emmanuel Macron on Friday said he would press ahead with reforms, dodging a union leader’s call to suspend a new pension law amid some of France’s worst street violence in years. There were violent clashes across the country on Thursday evening on the fringes of otherwise peaceful protests that have for weeks gathered huge crowds against a rise in the pension age by two years to 64. A police station was targeted in the western town of Lorient, the main entrance of the Bordeaux town hall was set ablaze and hundreds of fires were recorded nationwide. Some 441 police officers were injured and 475 people were arrested. Dozens of protesters were also injured....

China and Allies Seeking to Overturn US-Led Global Order: Former National Security Official

China and its allies are seeking to alter the global order set up by the United States, according to Alex Gray, senior fellow at the American Foreign Policy Council (AFPC) and former Deputy Assistant to the President and Chief of Staff of the National Security Council (NSC) at the White House. “We need to acknowledge that China, Russia—and to a lesser extent Iran—are building an axis to try and change the traditional U.S. order globally,” Gray recently told “China in Focus” on NTD, the sister media outlet of The Epoch Times. The former official said that since 1945, the United States has “ordered the world in such a way as to be amenable to free markets, free people, democracy—really our system of governance and the way we view the world.”...

Swiss Central Bank Hikes Interest Rates Despite Credit Suisse Turmoil

The Swiss National Bank (SNB) raised its interest rates by 50 basis points despite the turmoil over the Credit Suisse collapse. The SNB made the announcement on March 23, bringing its borrowing rate to 1.5 percent, for its fourth consecutive hike, which was is in line with analysts’ predictions Swiss interests rates were negative 75 percent until June, when the central bank started to hike interest rates for the first time in 15 years due to rising inflation. The country’s interest rates first moved out of negative territory in September with a 75 basis-point hike. Monetary policy was even tightened further this month to counter “the renewed increase in inflationary pressure,” the central bank said in a press release. The bank stated that further tightening “cannot be ruled out … to ensure price stability over the medium term.”...

At Least Nine Dead in Russian Air Strikes on Two Ukrainian Cities

RZHYSHCHIV, Ukraine—Russian air strikes on Ukrainian cities on Wednesday killed at least nine people in attacks that President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said showed Moscow was not interested in peace. In a series of early-morning drone strikes, at least eight people were killed and seven were injured when two dormitories and a college were hit in Rzhyshchiv, 40 miles (64 km) south of the capital Kyiv, emergency services said on Facebook. One person was rescued from the site and four people were believed trapped under rubble. Rescue operations were continuing on Wednesday night. The attack left a gaping hole in the top floor of a five-storey dormitory. A pile of rubble marked where part of another building had stood, a Reuters witness said....

Xi to Putin: Russia, China Are Driving Change ‘Which Hasn’t Happened in 100 Years’

Chinese communist leader Xi Jinping has said that his regime and Vladimir Putin’s Russia are working together to drive forward a “change” that hasn’t been seen on the world stage in a century. Putin had been hosting Xi in Moscow as a guest of honor this week as the two authoritarian powers continue to commit to increasing diplomatic, economic, and military cooperation. As Xi left the Kremlin on March 22, he turned to Putin and said with a smile: “This is exactly, right now, the change which hasn’t happened in 100 years. “And it is we, together, who are driving these changes forward.”...

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Makes Surprise Visit to Ukraine, Meets Zelenskyy

BUCHA, Ukraine/TOKYO—Japan’s Fumio Kishida met President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on Tuesday during a rare, unannounced visit by a Japanese leader that underscored Tokyo’s emphatic support for Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s invasion. The Japanese prime minister had been the only leader of the Group of Seven (G-7) rich nations yet to visit Ukraine, which has seen an outpouring of popular support in Japan following the Russian invasion. Zelenskyy posted footage of him greeting Kishida, whom the Ukrainian leader called “a truly powerful defender of the international order and a longtime friend of Ukraine.” Earlier, Kishida toured the town of Bucha, where the mayor has said more than 400 civilians were killed last year by Russian forces....

US Expedites Delivery of Abrams Battle Tanks to Ukraine

The United States is expediting its delivery of battle tanks to Ukraine by providing a different variant of armored capability than previously decided. Ukraine will still receive a full battalion of Abrams battle tanks from the United States, but will be getting the M1A1 variant rather than the M1A2 variant. The M1A1 is a slightly older variant with similar armament but older electronic systems and different tracks. “[Department of Defense] announced in January that the United States would be providing 31 M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine under the Ukraine Security Assistance initiative with the intent of providing the M1A2 variant,” said Pentagon Press Secretary Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder during a March 21 press conference....

Potential Ukraine-Russia Peace Proposal Brokered by China Would Undermine US Reputation: Expert

A potential Ukraine-Russia peace proposal brokered by China would undermine the reputation of the United States, according to Gregory Copley, president of the International Strategic Studies Association. China released a Feb. 24 position paper that outlined the communist regime’s desire to be a mediator in the conflict. On March 20, Chinese leader Xi Jinping arrived in Moscow for a three-day state visit to Russia, with Xi and Russian President Vladimir Putin expected to discuss China’s proposal for resolving the conflict in Ukraine. While the proposal from Beijing offers nothing tangible or substantive for either country, it does give them the excuse to sit down and negotiate, Copley told China in Focus on NTD, the sister media outlet of The Epoch Times....
