Pérez Wins F1 Sprint in Baku, Verstappen Confronts Russell

BAKU, Azerbaijan—Max Verstappen confronted George Russell in the pit lane following a collision as his teammate Sergio Pérez won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix sprint race on Saturday. Red Bull remains the team to beat in Formula One, with Pérez first and Verstappen third in the sprint, but Verstappen was unhappy after Russell left a hole in his car’s sidepod in the collision, hampering Verstappen’s chances of taking second from Charles Leclerc of resurgent Ferrari. Verstappen walked up to Mercedes driver Russell in the pit lane and seemed to suggest he would be similarly uncompromising when racing Russell in future following the first-lap collision....

IMF Predicts Potential ‘Disorderly’ Price Corrections in European Housing Market

Home prices in Europe, which are overvalued in many places, could see major price corrections as the region confronts elevated inflation and tight financial conditions, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said in a recent report. Europe is facing multiple economic challenges, with inflation remaining high and financial sector risks materializing. At the same time, real estate markets are showing “growing signs of overvaluation” across the region, according to the April 28 report. In countries such as Hungary, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Iceland, and the Czech Republic, real house prices have doubled since 2015. The IMF is expecting real estate markets in Europe to see “disorderly corrections” even if the region were to avoid a “broader financial distress.”...

Top US General: Ukraine Has What It Needs to Launch Spring Offensive

Ukraine has received more than 230 battle tanks and 1,550 assorted combat vehicles from its Western allies and now has all the equipment and munitions it needs to launch its spring offensive against Russia, the commander of United States forces in Europe told a congressional panel on April 26. “Over 98 percent of the combat vehicles are already there,” said U.S. European Command (USEUCOM) Gen. Christopher Cavoli. “I am very confident that we have delivered the matériel that they need, and we’ll continue a pipeline to sustain their operations as well.” The 54-nation Ukraine Defense Contact Group has been “very generous” in responding to Kyiv’s calls for assistance in fighting off Russia’s invasion, he said, “especially with regard to tanks and armored fighting vehicles. And we have been shipping it into the country. The Ukrainians are in a good position.”...

Sweden Expels 5 Russian Embassy Staff on Suspicion of Spying

STOCKHOLM—Sweden informed Russia on Tuesday that five employees of the Russian Embassy in Stockholm were asked to leave the country because they were suspected of spying. Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström said the alleged activities of the five were “incompatible” with their diplomatic status. Billström said Russia’s ambassador to Sweden, Viktor Tatarintsev, was informed of the expulsions. The Swedish Security Service, which is known by the acronym SAPO, recently received a list of names of a number of suspected Russian intelligence officers, Swedish broadcaster SVT reported. The domestic security agency has said that “every third Russian diplomat in Sweden is an intelligence officer.”...

Ukrainian Counter-Offensive Activities Reported in Kherson, Donetsk

Ukrainian forces are staging regular attacks on the Russian-held eastern bank of the Dnipro River in the Kherson region, according to a top Ukrainian regional official. “Our military visit the left [eastern] bank very often, conducting raids,” Yuriy Sobolevskiy, deputy head of Kherson’s Kyiv-appointed regional administration, said in televised comments on April 25. “The Ukrainian armed forces are working … very effectively,” he added. Russian forces captured most of Kherson and three other regions in the opening weeks of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, now in its second year. Last November, however, they withdrew from northwestern Kherson to more defensible positions along the eastern bank of the Dnipro....

China’s Ambassador to France Questions Sovereignty of Ex-Soviet States, Infuriating European Leaders

The Chinese communist regime’s ambassador to France publicly claimed on Friday that Crimea “belongs to Russia from the very beginning,” and that post-USSR republics “have no effective status” in international law, infuriating European leaders. Lu Shaye, the Chinese regime’s “wolf warrior” diplomat who often makes aggressive and controversial remarks, was interviewed by French media on April 21. When asked about his position on whether Crimea is part of Ukraine, Lu said, “It depends on how you perceive the problem.” When pressed by journalist Darius Rochebin, Lu said, “It’s not that simple,” and stated that Crimea “belongs to Russia from the very beginning.”...

Texan Princess Evicted From Rome Villa, Caravaggio Stays

ROME—A Texas-born princess piled her four yapping bichon frise dogs into a taxi Thursday after being evicted, following a bitter inheritance dispute, from a historic villa in Rome that contains the only known ceiling painted by Caravaggio. Princess Rita Jenrette Boncompagni Ludovisi, nee Rita Carpenter, abandoned the Casino dell’Aurora off the swank Via Veneto hours after Carabinieri police arrived to enforce a court-mandated eviction order. Before she had even left, a locksmith changed the locks on the big green front door. Her dramatic exit—one of the dogs briefly escaped as she spoke to journalists on the street—capped a remarkable, years-long soap opera that exposed the dirty laundry of one of Rome’s aristocratic families. The Boncompagni Ludovisi are perhaps best known for having produced Pope Gregory XIII of Gregorian calendar fame. But lately they have attracted more attention due to the inheritance dispute and court-mandated auction of their famous villa in the heart of Rome......

Protesters Storm Paris Euronext Building Over Pension Reform

A group of protesters briefly invaded stock market operator Euronext’s offices in the La Defense business district of Paris on Thursday, as protests against French President Macron’s pension reforms continue. The protesters said that big companies should pay to finance pensions. “We are told that there is no money to finance pensions,” said SUD-Rail unionist, Fabien Villedieu. There is “no need to get the money from the pockets of workers,” he said, as “there is some in the pockets of billionaires.” Waving union flags, the group of a few hundred protesters occupied the Euronext building’s lobby. The area was engulfed in red smoke from flares, and the protesters chanted slogans popular during the anti-pension reform protests: “We are here, we are here, even if Macron does not want it, we are here.”...
