Trump Says Wagner Group Mutiny Somewhat Weakened Putin

Former U.S. President Donald Trump said a brief military mutiny by Russia’s Wagner Group private military force put Russian President Vladimir Putin on a less stable footing in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. “You could say that [Putin is] still there, he’s still strong, but he certainly has been I would say somewhat weakened at least in the minds of a lot of people,” Trump said in an interview with Reuters on Thursday. The Wagner Group is an extralegal private military force that has enjoyed the sanction and financial support of the Russian government under Putin. Throughout its history, the Wagner Group has fought in conflicts alongside regular Russian forces in Syria and Ukraine....

US Embassy Issues Warning to American Citizens: Avoid French Cities

The U.S. Embassy issued a bulletin urging American citizens in France to exercise caution amid widespread rioting and unrest following a police-involved shooting earlier this week. “Following the June 27 police shooting in the Parisian suburb of Nanterre, demonstrations are taking place in the greater Paris region and other major urban centers with reports of damage to private property and public buildings,” the U.S. Embassy said in a bulletin, dated June 29. It noted that those demonstrations and “spontaneous protests,” which many have described as rioting, are “expected to continue and may turn violent.” American citizens should avoid large gatherings and areas with significant police activity, said the bulletin. Some cities are also imposing curfews amid the violence, it said....

Pence Makes Surprise Trip to Ukraine Says Moment Calls for Leadership

Former Vice President Mike Pence made a surprise trip to Ukraine on June 29 to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy amid the country’s ongoing war with Russia. The move makes him the first Republican presidential hopeful to meet with the Ukrainian leader since the war began. Pence made the trip with the Christian humanitarian organization Samaritan’s Purse. In addition to his meeting with Zelenskyy, his agenda for the day included an update on local human rights violations, security briefings from Ukrainian officials, and visits to various sites to honor fallen Ukrainians. “I believe America’s the leader of the free world,” Pence told NBC News in an exclusive interview. “But coming here just as a private citizen, being able to really see firsthand the heroism of the Ukrainian soldiers holding the line in those woods, see the heroism of the people here in Irpin that held back the Russian army, to see families whose homes were literally shelled in the midst of an unconsciona...

France Mobilizes 40000 Officers to Quell Violence as Teens Death Sparks Outrage

The French government announced on June 29 that 40,000 police officers will be deployed across the country after rioters caused severe damage to public property amid widespread outrage over the deadly police shooting of a teenage boy. The unrest in the country comes after 17-year-old Nahel M. was shot dead by a police officer during a traffic stop in Nanterre, just outside Paris, on Tuesday. The deadly encounter was captured on video. After a crisis meeting early on Thursday, France’s Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin told reporters that the “professionals of disorder should go home.” He confirmed that policing will be more than quadrupled—from 9,000 officers to 40,000. In Paris alone, the number of officers deployed will be more than doubled....

Kremlin Silent on Top Generals Post-Mutiny Absence From Public View

The Kremlin has declined to comment on the current whereabouts of Sergey Surovikin, a top Russian general who has been absent from public view since last week’s aborted mutiny by the leader of Russia’s Wagner Group Yevgeny Prigozhin. “I recommend that you ask the Defense Ministry,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on June 29 when queried about Surovikin’s whereabouts. “That’s the ministry’s prerogative,” he added. The Defense Ministry, for its part, has not issued any statements regarding the general or his recent activities. Highly regarded in Russian military circles and reportedly popular with the troops, Surovikin served with distinction in previous conflicts, including those in Chechnya and Syria....

Transgender People More Likely to Die of Suicide Than General Population Danish Study Finds

Shedding new light on the question of whether “gender-affirming” treatment reduces suicide risks among people suffering from gender dysphoria, a new study found that transgender individuals in Denmark are at significantly higher risk of suicide compared to the northern European country’s general population. For their study, published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers at the Danish Research Institute for Suicide Prevention in Copenhagen examined the health and legal records of 6.6 million Danish-born people over the span of 42 years. The team identified and focused on 3,759 individuals (0.06 percent) who came out as transgender at a median age of 22 through a legal gender change or a hospital diagnosis or both between 1980 and 2021. Prior to 2014, Danish citizens must first undergo “gender-affirming” sterilization and surgery before they could legally change their gender identity....

Zelenskyy Could Delay Ukraines Elections Amid War With Russia

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has indicated he could put off his country’s election cycle and stay in power as long as the war with Russia continues. In an interview with the BBC published on June 22, Zelenskyy could not guarantee a presidential election would take place in 2024, when his five-year term ends. Zelenskyy said Ukrainian law prohibits elections when the country is under martial law, as has been the case since Russian forces launched their full-scale invasion of the country on Feb. 24, 2022. When asked whether there would be elections in Ukraine next year, Zelenskyy noted Ukraine’s ongoing state of martial law, and said he hoped for an end to the war by next year, but did not say he would let elections proceed even if the war with Russia were still running by that point....

Putin Breaks Silence for First Time Since Wagner Mutiny Ended

Russian President Vladimir Putin has broken his silence for the first time since the Wagner mutiny ended in an uncertain truce on Saturday, with the Russian leader pledging in a televised address that the leaders of the Wagner rebellion would be brought to justice. Putin’s remarks on Monday were his first since a fiery speech several days ago while the apparent rebellion was still playing out and in which the Russian leader called the Wagner chief’s actions a “stab in the back” and pledged to crush what he described as a “rebellion.” Yevgeny Prigozhin, the Wagner leader, on Saturday ordered his fast-advancing troops to stand down and return to base in a deal in which criminal charges against him would reportedly be dropped as he agreed to go into exile in neighboring Belarus....

Wagner Mercenary Chief to Move to Belarus Not Face Prosecution for Rebel March: Kremlin

Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of Russia’s Wagner mercenary group, will move to neighboring Belarus as part of a deal to end what appeared to be an armed coup led by Prigozhin against Russia’s military leadership, according to the Kremlin. Prigozhin, who has been a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin for some 20 years, had earlier agreed to end what he described as a “march for justice” to topple Moscow’s military leadership after mediation from Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. Lukashenko’s office said Saturday that the Belarusian leader had Putin’s blessing to broker a deal that ended up halting the lightning-fast advance of Wagner forces towards Moscow....

Russia Says Wagner Groups Leader Will Move to Belarus Not Face Prosecution After Rebellious March

The rebellious Russian mercenary commander who ordered his troops to march on Moscow before abruptly reversing course will move to neighboring Belarus and not face prosecution, the Kremlin said Saturday, as part of a deal to defuse a crisis that represented the most significant challenge to President Vladimir Putin in his more than two decades in power. The charges against Yevgeny Prigozhin for mounting an armed rebellion will be dropped and the troops who joined him also will not be prosecuted, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced, and fighters from his Wagner Group who did not take part in the uprising will be offered contracts by the Defense Ministry....

Drone Wars: UAVs Shape the Tide of Conflict Between Russia and Ukraine

On the morning of June 21, Russian air defenses foiled an airborne drone attack—the third in two months—just outside Moscow, according to officials. In a statement, the Russian Defense Ministry said three Ukrainian drones had been destroyed after approaching sensitive facilities in the Moscow region. The Russian press later reported that the attack had been aimed at a Russian infantry division based a mere 35 miles from the Kremlin. The Epoch Times was unable to verify Moscow’s assertions. Kyiv, meanwhile, dismissed claims that it was responsible. Nevertheless, the episode illustrates the increasingly central role played by drones in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which is about to enter its 16th month....

Consumer Groups Call on Washington and Brussels to Regulate AI Tech

A coalition of consumer advocacy groups in the European Union and the United States called on their governments to develop regulations for generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology. These groups are concerned about AI tech that power tools like ChatGPT are developing so quickly that consumers’ rights may be grievously harmed if state regulators fail to get involved. The Transatlantic Consumer Dialogue (TACD), a coalition of consumer groups in the EU and North America, sent letters on June 21, to government leaders, out of concern that the rapid development and adoption of generative AI is rapidly outpacing legislative and regulatory action and could leave “leave consumers unprotected in the meantime.”...

Ukraine Reports Limited Gains; Moscow Claims Kyivs Offensive Has Stalled

Two weeks after the de facto initiation of a long-awaited Ukrainian counteroffensive against Russian forces, both sides are claiming battlefield victories in the Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions. Kyiv claimed that its troops have successfully penetrated several miles beyond Russian defense lines and have retaken several strategic positions. Moscow countered that Kyiv’s counterattack has been stopped in its tracks—at tremendous cost to Ukrainian manpower and equipment. According to Hanna Maliar, Ukraine’s deputy defense minister, Kyiv’s forces in recent days have pushed past Russian defense lines by more than four miles, retaking a total of 44 square miles of land....
